Dr. Mojgan Makki is a practicing psychiatrist with over 15 years of experience. She is a double board certified physician with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. She has extensive experience in inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings, treating a wide range of mental health disorders in children, adolescents, and adults.
Her areas of expertise include evaluation of patients with complicated medical and psychiatric conditions. Her philosophy of care is to formulate a “treatment plan” based on each patient's individual strengths and their surrounding environments at home, school, and work. She believes that in order to achieve optimal results, all the above dynamics have to be addressed and actively managed.
In her practice, Dr. Makki values collaborating with other providers including school social workers or liaisons, individual therapists, and other medical providers who work with the patient. As a medical doctor, with a strong history of work in academic hospital centers, including Washington University, Dr. Makki believes in a thorough medical work-up which can include: imaging, genetic, chromosomal, or laboratory testing. She values the use of psychotropic medication to alleviate intolerable and paralyzing symptoms and stabilize her patients, allowing them to become less symptomatic and more successful.
Dr. Makki is affiliated with multiple university hospitals in the Chicago area, including Rush University Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition to her private practice, which has two convenient locations (Northfield and Chicago), Dr. Makki consults with a number of schools in Cook County and Lake County. She is also a partner at Solutions Northshore, a unique, family-focused practice that specializes in helping parents and families find personal solutions for positive change. She is also the medical director of Benchmark Psych Services.
Dr. Makki is an advocate for child and adolescent mental health through her involvement with national organizations and her work with the American Medical Association and psychiatric associations. She has served on the board of directors of the Illinois Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is a delegate to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She has served as a medical director for the Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit at Rush Medical University and at other hospitals in the St. Louis and Chicago areas. She has established and directed specialized programs for toddlers, infants, and preschoolers (TIPS Clinic) at Rush University Medical Center and has a special interest in treating young children with behavioral and psychiatric issues and concerns .
Dr. Makki has been a mentor to peers and trainees and continues to provide clinical teaching and supervision for medical students, residents, and fellows. She has been the recipient of multiple awards including the Distinguished Fellow at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Rush University Teacher’s Award.
